ESPRIT-DE-CORPS

ESPRIT-DE-CORPS

Esprit-de-corps, camaraderie, regimentation are words I heard all along my 42 years in uniform. When someone in the civvy street asked me what it really meant, I found it was difficult to explain. It is not easy to grasp the meaning of these words by going through Wikipedia or the oxford or Chambers dictionary. These are words to experience, to feel.

In another blog I mentioned the peculiarity of this esprit de corps I experienced at the NDA particularly Foxtrot Squadron.

Today it was so different. In the last 2 days, I attended the wedding ceremony of a very dear
friend’s daughter. The friend, now a very senior army officer belongs to 2 BIHAR – the the battalion in which I was commissioned in 1970. I met Ashu on a course. He had joined the battalion soon after I had left. We became very good friends. We met each other often and kept in touch through letters and all. Today, about 37 years after i first met him in Faizabad, I found the 2 BIHAR bond had been getting stronger and stronger.

In the wedding there were, if my counting is not too bad, about 12-15 officers. A few belonged to my era but majority of them had joined many many years later. I have been visiting 2 BIHAR often, yet I met many officers and ladies for the first time. was it really the firts time ?/ yes, physically, factually, but not mentally. we seemed to know each other so well – just because of the fact that we belonged to 2 BIHAR now code named ADWITYA. All of us probably had a feeling which is esprit-de-corps,  but can that be described ?? Can that be understood by those who are not fortunate to experience such bonding? I wonder !!
